The Romelia Sea Turtles Conservation Project has been in operation since 2009. Its primary goal is to safeguard the sea turtle population that nests on the beaches of the wildlife sanctuary in Montezuma, Costa Rica. The project includes monitoring nesting sea turtles, participating in night patrols, and safeguarding and monitoring the nests. The Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Romelia is beautiful, with rolling Pacific Ocean waves, iconic sea stacks, and serene rivers and waterfalls. It is one of the peninsula’s last remaining sanctuaries of untouched wilderness. The place is situated only 30 minutes away from the delightful beach town of Montezuma. If you participate as a research assistant, you will enjoy the rainy season, which provides opportunities to participate in the protection protocols for nesting and hatching sea turtles. You will also witness diverse wildlife species, like frogs singing in the rain. Giant bullfrogs, beautiful red-eyed frogs, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, and numerous birds are among the most common species.
Furthermore, you can spot bats and other nocturnal mammals as they begin their activities at night. Romelia is a perfect place to explore and enjoy wildlife. To be eligible for this project, you must be at least 21 years old and either a professional or a student in biology or a related field. Bilingualism in English and Spanish is required, with advanced Spanish skills a plus. You must be enthusiastic, dynamic, self-motivated, and a team player. Good physical health and condition, the ability to handle tropical weather and conditions, and a fondness for isolated living are necessary. Finally, the minimum duration of stay is 3 ½ months.
